On Tuesday, April 13th at 7:00pm EST our guest speakers will be Barbara Lindberg & Carol Buckhout of the Cazenovia College. Together they will be covering "Industry & College Connections." Included in this discussion will be internships, how to source new graduates looking for positions, options for those already in the industry to enhance their own education/experiences and more.
Barbara Lindberg became the Cazenovia College Equine Studies Program Director in the fall of 2003 following a position as assistant professor of Equine Studies at Johnson and Wales University, where she was for three years prior to that. While at Johnson and Wales, she was also Director of Riding. From 1996-2000, Lindberg was the executive director of English riding and assistant professor of Equine Studies at the University of Findlay, and from 1988-1996 was an Equine Science instructor and assistant professor at the SUNY College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville. Prior to her career in academia, she held training, teaching and management positions at hunter, dressage and eventing facilities.
As a faculty member in the Equine Business Management program at Cazenovia College, Carol Buckhout teaches several courses related to the equine sciences and pleasure driving. She also co-teaches the equine junior and senior seminar courses and she serves as the faculty coordinator for students pursuing their equine internship experiences. Over the years, she has assisted hundreds of students in the research, application process and completion of both elective and required management internships. In many cases, the students’ experiences have led to jobs in- or related to- their actual internship experiences. Carol is a member of several professional organizations, including the Equine Science Society, the USEF and the USSHBA. She serves as the board president of the Lorenzo Driving Competition, an annual pleasure driving competition and she enjoys riding, driving and showing her Morgan gelding.

1 – 3 foals a year, GOV. Jumping and Dressage
What is a favorite success story of a horse you’ve bred?
I have several, but here are two of my favorites. Starrs and Strips aka Flag is owned by professional dressage trainer Mary Mahler. Mary bought Flag from me as a 6 month old colt. She has trained him all the way to Grand Prix. Also I bred Rainmaker, a stallion by Rainbow, owned by Lisa Beth Stanley of Vecala Valley Farm. He has produced some very nice babies.
What is something you’ve learned along the way that would be helpful to a new breeder?
Breed for good health, mind and athleticism and the offspring will determine their path to a discipline.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Breed for what you personally love.

Average number of foals per year? What registries and discipline(s)?
Average foals per year is 6 between the Texas and Germany operations. Dressage.
What is a favorite success story of a horse you’ve bred?
My greatest success as a breeder to date came in 2020 when Lyjanair (Lyjanero x Coriano) won both the Holstein Landeschampionat (regional championship for 6 year olds) and the Bundeschampionat (German National Championships for young horses) in Warendorf. Quite a pair of wins! He had been purchased by top Swiss rider Rolf Goran Bengtsson as a four year old, which gave a solid, professional acknowledgement to my program. Another noteworthy horse from our program is Fleeceworks Cinco, two time winner of the YEH Championships under Tamie Smith.
What is something you’ve learned along the way that would be helpful to a new breeder?
My advice would be to acquire mares from strong sport lines and families to build a successful program and spend time learning about pedigrees. Join conversations and be open to constructive criticism and improvement.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Be ready for a long term commitment. Breeding is a course of study which never ends.
